On the odd chance that anyone still posts in this forum, let's look ahead to the coming Indiana football and Indiana basketball seasons.  Where to set the bar?

IU football:  Personally I like what I've read/heard about Kevin Wilson so far but as we all know talk is cheap and it is easy to say the right things in the spring, summer and early fall but the bottom line will be the product on the field starting in September.  For my purposes I am setting the bar at 6-6 overall record.  I mean after all, even with a HC as putrid as Bill Lynch we have been able to finish in the 4-8 and 5-7 range recently.  If Wilson is for real then I think winning that extra 1-2 games to gain bowl eligibility is certainly possible.  Biggest questions marks about 2011 IU football for me:  1)  The QB race, who will it be? and 2)  The level of improvement on defense.  Supposedly we have competent teaching on that side of the ball now.  We'll see.

IU basketball:  One thing is for sure, another 20 loss season isn't going to fly.  The arrival of Cody Zeller certainly begs for some optimism but at the same time this kid isn't going to singlehandedly transform our team into winners immediately.  He will still have to deal with being a freshman big in the Big Ten and there will be positives and negatives I'm sure.  The main thing holding me back right now is the fact this will basically be the same team on the court as last season except with Zeller, Etherington and Abell in the mix.  Now of course the returning players can certainly improve and IF Creek can get back to being Creek then that helps too.  A lot of IU fans on other boards (lol) seem to be expecting 20 wins and NCAA tourney contention.  Myself, I just see that as way too bold right now.  I personally would set the initial bar at winning 16-18 overall games, gaining NIT eligibility and then if as a bonus we can sneak onto the NCAA bubble then so be it.  But truly I don't think we get back to being a sure thing for the NCAA tourney again until we get this 2012 class in uniform.

Thoughts?

Okay if we are keeping this board alive then it is time for some replies to my most excellent thread.   :IC

I'll bite. I'm hoping for Dusty Kiel and Duwyce Wilson to do a whole lot of pitching and catching for the Hoosiers this season. Here is a good article from earlier this month from the Columbus paper.

After so many years of mediocrity it's tough to be optimistic enough to think we will see our boys bowling and/or dancing this season. Sure would be nice to see, if it does happen.

The reality of the situation is that it would not take that much improvement to achieve bowl eligibility.  As bad a coach as Lynch was, we usually were only 1-2 wins from a bowl game most years.  6-6 should be achievable given our schedule this fall.

So anyone hearing rumors that Dusty's younger brother Gunner is seriously considering IU?  Of course it seems unreal since he has schools like Oklahoma and Alabama recruiting him but these whispers about his interest in IU seem to be fairly strong.  That would be an absolute recruiting coup for Wilson since Gunner is like the #1 ranked QB in the 2012 class.  I'm not going to hold my breath though.

Yeah, but I'm tired of IU plaing half of the MAC in order to try to get eligible for the Poulan Weed-Eater bowl...I guess with there was nothing Wilson could do about this year, but we need to step up our non-conference competition...Time to see a coach that can make some real progress with the football program...

Kiel sounds like he would be a great get, but we're in there with some real heavyweights...And you have to wonder of he wants to try and step in somewhere right away and play...In IU's case, that would mean supplanting his brother...

As for IU basketball, I think we'd better be .500 or better, or the natives will be getting really restless...

I think our schedule does get a little better in the coming years.  We have some future BCS opponents such as Wake Forest & Missouri.  Not mind blowing but a little better.  Also we are going to be playing Navy soon.  I tend to think in a good year they are better than MAC level.  At least recently.

Also Coach Wilson recently did an interview with ESPN and he stated he doesn't want us selling off any more home games ala the PSU game last year so hopefully he will also work to get Glass to toughen up the OOC slate as time goes on.

There is our football schedules through 2014.  Got Navy home-and-home and Missouri home-and-home.  Moving the right direction imo and I think Wilson will continue to request some tougher opponents.

And how about that Gunner Kiel verbal commitment today?

Gotta give Coach Wilson credit...To get Kiel over some of the real BCS heavyweights is quite a coup...

As for basketball...I'm really looking forward to this year...Not that I think we'll challenge for the B10 championship, but I think the days of us getting run over are coming to an end...

Kiel really struggled last night in Columbus East's opening game 28-7 win over Greenwood.

Well, looks like another long year in football...I mean, it's not so much we get beat by Ball State, but, by all accounts, to get manhandled on both sides of the line of scrimmage by a friggin MAC team (and not a very good one, at that) well...

What are we going to do with a bona fide B10 team?

Probably get our asses handed to us.  Thank God we still have purwho on the schedule! lol

I didn't think Wilson was going to seriously be able to turn things around overnight -- given the state of our defense.  I DID expect better things from our offense given the returning linemen and decent backs and receivers.  I DO think Wilson will turn our program around, and we will at least have as much success as Coach Mal brought us.

As far as bball, Crean had BETTER at least get us into the NIT this year.  I don't see any more excuses for sub-500 seasons.  In the next 2-3 years, we had better be in position to challenge for the Big Ten crown.  I fully expect that, and anything less means it's time for a change.  Hell, there are candidates out there.  Pearl will be off of his 3 year "show cause," Pat Knight will be available, either Pitino or Calipari will be ready to move north out of KY.......

Football team has been terribly disappointing so far.  Apparently Coach Wilson got in a physical confrontation with Dusty Kiel and that has Gunner questioning his status at this point.  None of this is public knowledge per se but I trust the source.   :-\

And then we get badly beaten by an 0-4 team that was 120th out of 120 FBS teams in total defense...Wow...

I think there is definitely some internal turmoil on this team.  Aside from the aforementioned Coach Wilson/Dusty rumor, there are rumblings about some guys wanting to transfer.  Kevin Bush has quit the team.  Belcher missed the trip to Texas under mysterious circumstances (i.e. "undisclosed injury").  I know we don't have a lot of talent but these kids aren't playing nearly hard enough in some of these games and I don't know if it is because they aren't used to the coach being a hard ass after 5 years of marshallow soft Bill Lynch or maybe they just don't understand the schemes?  Also we are playing a TON of freshman which probably doesn't help matters.  The Big Ten season is going to be VERY ugly at this rate.

From today's Columbus paper:
"Kiel said he remains committed to play football for Indiana University despite the team’s struggles under first-year head coach Kevin Wilson. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal-caller has thrown for 1,755 yards, 20 touchdowns and tossed just two interceptions for Class 4A’s No. 3-ranked O’s. "

Yeah, just a few days after what was previously reported, saw in the Columbus paper that he is now looking seriously at Notre Dame, where Uncle Blair played.

The way Tre Roberson has been playing, I really don't care about Gunner anymore.  But holy shit we need to recruit a defense!
