Now that Bob Knight has been selected for induction into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame, the pressing question is, what are the chances of Knight appearing at the Nov. 6 induction ceremonies?
“Slim to none,” said A.J. Guyton, who played on Knight’s last IU team, the 1999-2000 Hoosiers.
“I’ll be shocked if he comes back,” Guyton added.
“He better come back,” said Daryl Thomas, a member of Knight’s last NCAA championship club, the 1986-87 Hoosiers.
“I’m no authority on what he will or will not do,” Thomas said, “but I think he will. A lot of that stuff is now water under the bridge.”
“I think if Coach decides to not come back, I will completely understand,” said Michael Lewis, a fellow senior with Guyton on Knight’s last Hoosier team. “I think if would be a great thing if he did, because he has meant so much, not only to former players, but to students, alumni and Indiana basketball fans.”
“It’s a tough call,” said Brian Evans, the Big Ten’s 1996 MVP. “I don’t have a feeling one way or the other on how he will go...”
...If Knight chooses to not attend, it doesn’t mean the rift is hopelessly final said Steve Green, a member of Knight’s first recruiting class. Also selected for induction is a member of Knight’s former Texas Tech staff, Steve Downing, the 1973 Big Ten MVP and a former teammate of Green.
“I wouldn’t read too much into it if they don’t show up,” Green said. “Let’s just say it’s right that they are in the Hall of Fame. Whether they are in any hall of fame matters little to me. It doesn’t take that for me to know what great people they were...”
