In addition to Fresno State getting 4 years probation for 440 impermissable calls to basketball recruits, their former head coach Ray Lopes gets a personal 3 year "show cause" order where he cannot be hired in any capacity by a NCAA school for the next three years without petitioning the NCAA and proving to the NCAA he is fit to coach.

Ray Lopes was on Kelvin's staff and I believe made some of the impermissable calls OU got nailed for.

More important, Kelvin and his staff made more than 100 more impermissable calls than the Fresno State staff with Kelvin alone making over 200 impermissable calls.

If Lopes essentially got a three year coaching ban, I can't believe the NCAA can go any lighter on Kelvin considering his offenses were worse.

With Bowlsby leaving Iowa, hello Steve Alford and welcome as head coach of the IU men's basketball team.

i think part of the harshness of the penalty was due to the history of infractions at fresno st.  according to the  article, the board considered the death penalty due to that fact, but decided on going a little lighter.

not sure how that will factor into sampson's penalty or IU's inheritance of the punishment.

I can't imagine Sampson getting that type of punishment.  Does anyone know if IU has some type of escape clause if the NCAA decides to stick it to him?

Alford was a great player for the Hoosiers and that's the way I'd like to remember him.  Even though he would be a huge upgrade over Davis, he's not ready for a position like IU at this stage in his coaching career.  He would have such high expectations so quickly, and combined with his initial difficulty in recruiting I think it would turn really ugly for him and the program.  Sampson's a helluva coach and he's proved it at a Football School that was hard to recruit from.  I think we are going to have some great basketball under Sampson and I'm excited about it.
